Luncheon in Honour
of CIC Alumnus
On Thursday, April 17th, 2003, Columbia International College
hosted a visit from CIC Alumnus, Minh Ngoc Hao Huynh, from
Vietnam, joined CIC in August 2001 and graduated in the Summer
of 2002. During his studies at CIC, Hao maintained a record
of academic excellence and an exceptional involvement in school
community.
Acting as a Head Mentor and School Prefect, Hao always took
it upon himself to contribute his efforts to CIC. As a Head
Mentor, Hao assisted new students to get settled into the
new environment. As a Prefect, Hao received leadership training
at Bark Lake, and used the skills he aquired to continuously
assist the school and student body.
As per Cathy Frizzle, LEAD Program Coordinator commented,
'Hao is always very polite and extremely respectful towards
others, he was ready to help at any time. His involvement
in the school community was outstanding. It is not often that
one encounters such qualities in a person'.
Presently, Hao continues his success at the University of
Waterloo. Hao chose to pursue his studies in the Faculty of
Mathematics, specializing in Computer Science. Hao was also
selected to act as the University of Waterloo Ambassador in
Vietnam this summer.
Proud to have such an outstanding Alumnus, the CIC Liaison
Department organized a special luncheon for Hao and CIC's
current Vietnamese students. The students were given the opportunity
to greet Hao and ask him questions regarding academics and
university life. The event was a success, and a glorious celebration
of Vietnamese achievement!
"CIC thanks you for all of your efforts,
Hao!"

Phan Phuong Thao on her extraordinary success. |
Every year, the Mathematical Association of America (at the
University of Nebraska, U.S.A.) offers the American Mathematics
Contest (AMC) for Grade 10 (AMC10) and Grade 12 (AMC12) students.
The AMC is a 75 minute examination containing secondary
school level mathematical questions. The main purpose of the
AMC 10 & 12 is to spur interest in mathematics and to develop
talent through solving challenging problems in a multiple-choice
format.
This year, there were more than 387,000 participants who
wrote the AMC(10 & 12), on February 27, 2003. The participants
came from over 5200 high schools across North America.
CIC is proud to announce that our student, Phan Phuong Tao,
from Vietnam, placed in the top 1% of all contestants who
wrote the AMC10. Phan Phuong Tao's outstanding achievment
earned her the top AMC10 award at CIC for 2003. Phan also
received an "Honor Roll of Distinction Pin" and "Certificate
of Distinction" in honour of her success.
When asked to comment on the AMC10, Phan explained, "The
contest was not difficult, however, it was challenging. I
have enjoyed participating in the contest and the opportunity
given by Columbia International College to allow all students
to explore things they like. I am looking forward to improving
my mathematical skills so I can continue to participate in
future contests."
A special mention also needs to be addressed, last semester,
Phan Phuong Hao achieved Top Student in three out of the four
courses she was enrolled in. CIC congratulates you for your
efforts and extends warm greetings.

| Principal Anna Shkolnik congratulates
Hoang Nguyen Tuan Anh on his sucess on the CHEM 13 News
Research Assistantship Examination |
Columbia International College congratulates Hoang Nguyen
Tuan Anh for his recent performance on the CHEM 13 News
Research Assistantship Examination. Hoang Tuan ranked
in the top 5% of more than 3500 students who wrote the exam
this past May.
The University of Waterloo Chemistry Department offers the
CHEM 13 News Research Assistantship Examination each
year, to highschool students interested in advanced chemistry.
The exam covers material that a well-read senior high school
chemistry student is likely to have come across in the course
of their studies. Participants were given demanding questions
not only on some of the main topics of high school chemistry,
but also on topics not normally covered in the high school
curriculum. The exam was definately challenging, however CIC's
Hoang Nguyen came out on top!
Prizes were given to the top 5% of students, including Hoang
Tuan, whose exam performance was among the best. This year,
the prize was a multi-coloured T-shirt. Hoang Tuan also received
a personal letter from the University of Waterloo and University
of Toronto congratulating him on his success. Hoang's name
will be published in the CHEM 13 NEWS.
To many, this recent achievment by Hoang Nguyen comes as
no surprise. Hoang has always been a top student, who has
excelled in Calculus, English and Chemistry. Hoang's Advanced
Intensive English teacher, Ms. Carol Hernandez-Gough has said,
"Tuan is a very motivated, hard working student".
Besides studying, Hoang is also very devoted to the school
community. Recently, he has been elected as a Prefect in the
boy's residence.
"CIC is proud of you Tuan!"
