All awards and scholarships are given by Columbia International College. To qualify, all credits must be taken within 12 consecutive months.

Governor General’s Medal

This is awarded each academic calendar year (from June to May) to the graduating student with the highest academic average in the best six 4U courses completed in that year. Student receives a medal from the Governor General of Canada.

Head Prefect Award

Residence and school head prefects receive this annual certificate of appreciation award.

Columbia Leadership Awards

Awarded annually to students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership. Recipients are recommended by staff and chosen by a panel consisting of the Principal or Vice-Principal, and student leadership coordinators.

Lieutenant Governor’s Volunteer Award

The award recognizes an exemplary volunteer among the graduating students. It pays tribute to those students who not only complete the number of volunteer hours required to graduate, but who go above and beyond.

Residence Council Leadership Award

Awarded annually to any student who has made a significant contribution to residence life. The residence council advisors choose the recipient.

Ontario Scholars

Graduating students who obtain an average of 80% in six 4U credits may be designated as Ontario Scholars. These students receive an Ontario Scholar Certificate and a letter of congratulations from the Ontario Ministry of Education.

Principal’s Scholarship

Three scholarships of $2000 awarded in May and December to the top 4U graduate with at least 85% average in the best six credits, and with at least 80% in 4U English.

Chan Kotecha Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Mr. Chan Kotecha a long-serving teacher and head of the Business Department, $500 is awarded annually in May to a graduating student entering Year I of a Business Program at a recognized Canadian University upon the recommendation of Columbia International College’s Business Department. A certificate of merit is given with the award.

Sylvia Park Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Sylvia Park, a graduate of Columbia International College, whose courage and determination throughout her battle with leukemia were an inspiration to all. Three scholarships of $500 each are awarded in December, May, and July to a graduating student who is an Ontario scholar and who demonstrated leadership through Student Council, Columbia Crew, Prefect System, or any co-curricular activity at Columbia.

Scarfone Hawkins LLP English Proficiency

Three scholarships of $500 awarded annually, one each in December, May, and June, to each semester’s top 4U graduate chosen by the English Department to be most improved in a senior English course.

Donnell Insurance Limited Residence Community Awards

Six awards of $500 presented annually, two each in December, May, and June to a male and a female graduating student.

Global Citizen Award

The Global Citizen award is designed to recognize students’ current experience and knowledge of citizenship at the school level. Three scholarships of $1000 will be awarded, one each in December, May, and June, to the graduate who has demonstrated the wisdom to respect and strive to understand people of different cultures and grow from their encounters with them, the compassion to care for all, and the courage to act and make a difference.

Harold Mills Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Mr. Harold Mills, Principal of Columbia International College from 1984-1992, and Principal Emeritus from 1993-2000. Three scholarships of $1000 are awarded annually, one each in May, June, and December to each semester’s top 4U graduate in Social Science.

Kevin Matthews Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Mr. Kevin Matthews, Maintenance Manager of Columbia International College from 1995-2010. Three scholarships of $1000 are awarded annually, one each in May, June, and December to a top 4U graduate who has demonstrated leadership and service to the Columbia community, overcame personal hardships or challenges and shown excellence and achievement.

Tan Ke Yan Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Tan Ke Yan whose tragic passing on March 13, 2004 moved us all deeply. One scholarship of $500 is awarded in May to the graduating student who showed the most consistent improvement in the ESL program and/or the University English Preparatory program and/or the Academic English program offered at Columbia.

Three scholarships of $1000 awarded annually, one each in December, May, and June, to each semester’s top 4U graduate in the Math and Science streams.

Durwood Jones Barkwell Chartered Accountant Award

Three awards of $500 awarded annually, one each in December, May, and June, to each semester’s top 4U graduate in Accounting.

Fine Arts Award

Three awards of $500 each awarded annually, one each in December, May and June to each semester’s top 4U/M graduate who has demonstrated excellence in the fine arts.

Young ASEP Achievers Scholarship of Excellence

Three scholarships of $500 will be awarded; one each in December, May and June to graduating YAA students who demonstrate good character, high academic achievement and commitment to the YAA programming. These students demonstrated significant involvement in the CIC community with respect to athletics, clubs, community service and leadership. Recipients must complete one full year of the YAA program and be recommended by Student Development Staff.

Continuing Scholarships & Awards

Rita Bosas Memorial Bursary

In memory of Mrs. Rita Bosas, a long serving teacher and ESL Department Head, $200 is awarded each 9-week semester to the ESL student who has shown the greatest improvement due to academic support. This student will be selected by the ESL Department head based upon the recommendation of teachers.

JMS Continuing Academic Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to any JMS student who has demonstrated academic excellence and who is continuing studies at Columbia, moving from grade 7 to grade 8 or, grade 8 to grade 9. JMS students are automatically considered for the continuing scholarships at the end of June in each academic year. The scholarship is applied as a reduction in school fees and is worth: $1000 if the student’s overall average grade is 85-89% $1500 if the overall average grade is 90% or higher.

External Community Service Award

Three scholarships of $500 will be awarded one each in December, May and June to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to community service to the greater Hamilton Community.

Athletics Award

Three scholarships of $500 will be awarded one each in December, May and June to a student who has demonstrated excellence in athletics and academicsand is a role model to other students.

ESL Continuing Scholarships

$200 is awarded at the end of each 9-week semester to the top ESL student who has demonstrated academic excellence and achieved a grade of 80% or above. To be eligible the student must continue studies at Columbia, moving from the ESL Department to the Academic English Department.

Internal Community Service Award

Three scholarships of $500 will be awarded one each in December, May and June to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to making the CIC community a better place for other students through their volunteer work in various projects, departments and initiatives.

Three scholarships of $500 will be awarded in May or June to a student in the respective JMS, ESL, and Grade 9, 10, and 11 programs who also demonstrates good character, high academic achievement and commitment to the YAA programming. These students demonstrate significant involvement in the Columbia community with respect to athletics, clubs, community service and leadership. Recipients must complete one full year of the YAA program.

These designated university entrance scholarships have been specially implemented for graduates of Columbia International College only. They represent the commitment of our University Partners to assist Columbia’s graduates to achieve excellence.

Special entrance scholarships of $3500 awarded to students graduating with a grade average between 90%-94.99%, and $5000 awarded to students graduating with an average of 95% or more.

Four designated scholarships valued at $3500 each awarded annually in December, May or June to the top 4U graduates of Columbia International College entering the university. Entrance Scholarships are renewable each year up to a maximum of four years once a student meets eligibility requirements.

Ten scholarships, each valued at $2000, are exclusively available to the top 10 Columbia graduates who are admitted to the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus.

Western will offer three designated admission scholarships to the top 4U graduate(s) of Columbia who register at Western’s main campus each year, at a value that will be $1000 higher than published admission scholarship values.
