Public Health Hamilton today declared that the H1N1 outbreak at Columbia International College is over. All students who reported symptoms to the medical clinic from 2009 September 28-October 8 have now been resolved (i.e. are now asymptomatic and are able to return to school). Only one student reported symptoms on October 9 and one other reported symptoms on October 13.
Positive signs of recovery from H1N1 flu outbreakThere are positive signs that the H1N1 outbreak at CIC is under control. Precautions to stop the spread of infection taken by the medical clinic staff, residence staff, housekeeping staff, teachers, and food services have helped to reduce the number of students reporting ill each day by 66%. In addition, all students who reported symptoms to the medical clinic from September 28-October 2 have now been resolved (i.e. are now asymptomatic and are able to return to school). The majority of students reporting symptoms this week have also been resolved.

Columbia’s International Cuisine Unveils Flavours of KoreaThursday, November 12th 2009 unveiled the 2nd installment of Columbia’s International Cuisine Series; Flavours of Korea. It was an evening highlighted by smiles and laughter, excited faces as well as a wide array of unique and delicious Korean dishes. The food, the music, the students, the games and the performances; all came together to deliver a perfect display of cultural appreciation, exchange and understanding.
Trick or Treat, the Columbia wayFriday, October 30th 2009, the day before Halloween, Columbia’s campus saw hallways of spooky fun and smiles of anticipation. Staff and students alike, were dressed in their best Halloween outfits. With students dressed up in various Halloween outfits, it seemed that the spirit of excitement was burning as bright as the grinning jack o’ lanterns that adorned the college’s gym.
Columbia’s Athletics HighlightsColumbia’s sports season kicked off to a great start. According to the Athletics Department, this is the busiest time of the semester for intramural and extramural programs. With a wide range of activities going on at Columbia, students are engaged in healthy and active lifestyles.
International Cuisine’s Grand Return to Columbia; the Caribbean PreludePresented by Columbia’s Student Development Office, the International Cuisine Series saw a full house on its opening – The Caribbean Prelude. With vibrant reds, greens and yellows adorning the Student Café, the Series got off to an amazing and promising start.
Goal-ing for the winColumbia’s varsity soccer team, the Cougars celebrated yet another victory, this time, against the Hamilton Police. With sub-zero temperatures on an overcast day, the soccer team showed off their athletic prowess, long running strides, excellent passes and scored two indefensible goals. With the entire team pumped up, and the game pulsating with energy, the showcase of soccer skills brightened up the dreary afternoon.
Spirit Week Extravaganza at ColumbiaExcitement was running high at Columbia’s Spirit Week (October 5th-9th). Themed days were a huge smash with the students as they indulged in their imagination, bringing forth an assortment of colors, shapes and styles. It was a colorful and vibrant week at Columbia indeed.
Spirit Week is organized by the Student Development Office and its aim is to instill community spirit, school pride and rapport within the College. It was a week filled with fun events, games and exciting themes; a highly anticipated series of events that saw meticulous preparation from both staff and students.
Columbia’s Afternoon of ‘Music and Lyrics’.It was an afternoon of melody, tunes and light laughter as students milled around the Café, eagerly anticipating the two-part, lunch hour Vocal Music Performance (Oct 14th-15th). It was an amazing transition from the quiet hallways to the Student Café. Excitement buzzed through the air as student craned to catch a glimpse of the performers.

Cathy Cheeranjie
Mrs. Cheeranjie joined Columbia in 2000. She received a Bachelor in Science with a major in Psychology from Mount Allison University, Canada. She lived and taught in Japan before joining Columbia. She has worked in various positions and taught leadership classes at Columbia. Currently, she is the Director of Student Development. She loves music, theatre, camping, hiking, traveling and trying foods from all over the world.
