Columbia recently built on a strong relationship with York University, by signing a Guaranteed Admission Agreement at our Ainsliewood campus. This was in addition to Columbia’s long-standing Dual Admission partnership with the University.

Columbia Sponsors IOI 2010

Some of the world’s brightest minds descended on the University of Waterloo for the 22nd International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) from August 14-21, 2010. As part of our long-standing commitment to international education and developing young minds, Columbia was the competition’s gold level sponsor. Other sponsors included BlackBerry®, Google, IBM and Amazon.com.

The IOI which was held in Canada for the first time is one of the world’s foremost computer science competitions. The University of Waterloo and its Faculty of Mathematics played host to the prestigious weeklong event.

Vocal Class Sings Jaki Tan Song

On Aug 23, 2010 Mr. James Lawlis’ Vocal Class performed a song by Columbia alumnus Jaki Tan. The song Take Girlfriend Home has been made famous by Tan who is in the Top 5 of Super Boy, a music talent show similar to American Idol. The video is now up on Columbia's YouTube Channel.

Columbia graduate Jaki (Jiexi) Tan has made it into the Top 5 of Super Boy, China’s most popular music talent show. Tan got his ticket to the next round after one of the six finalists was eliminated on August 13, 2010.

It is not everyday that one receives a personal welcome video from a university president, let alone three. In the run up to Fall Orientation Week, school staff filmed several university officials to create a series of unique videos.

Exploring Some of the World’s Top Universities

With the Fall Semester just beginning, students are already thinking about university. Every year, 100% of our graduates are accepted to university. At Columbia we are committed to providing each student with the tools to maximize their potential and achieve their dreams. As part of this commitment, Columbia’s University Placement Office organized Orientation Week trips to York, McMaster and Waterloo Universities from August 10-13.

Denice Garell

Ms. Denice Garell-Teti
Head of Junior Middle School
B.A, B.Ed & M.Ed

Having taught in Malaysia and Japan, Ms.Garell-Teti was inspired to teach international students. Prior to being appointed as Head of the Junior Middle School, she served as English Department Head and also taught a variety of Arts and Language courses. She obtained her undergraduate degrees in Arts and Education from McMaster and Queen’s Universities respectively. She further completed her Master’s in Education at the University of Toronto.

“The Junior-Middle School provides a supportive learning environment that is uniquely suited to the needs of grade 7 and 8 students. Our highly qualified staff have a passion for teaching this exciting and energetic age group. Our staff interact with the young students both inside the classroom and outside through a variety of structured and stimulating programs after-school and on weekends”. I have worked with and witnessed the personal growth of these young students. I am confident of the future success they will experience as a result of their time studying at Columbia”.
