On Nov 19, CIC Service Prefects launched the annual Global Health Mission (GHM) fundraiser in support of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and raised over CAD$2,000 for humanitarian aid.
It was a great opportunity for students to learn about the critical lifesaving work of MSF through experiential learning and contribute to providing humanitarian assistance to people in urgent need.
GHM is an international humanitarian medical organization best known for its work in conflict zones, following natural disasters, and in countries facing endemic diseases.
Since MSF is an international organization supporting over 70 countries, it’s a natural fit for our international student body to support their work!
Simulated Challenges Stimulates Selflessness
The students spend the day traveling through the school, and earning stamps in their passport by participating in activities that simulate the emergency medical care and preventative work of MSF.
We are excited to see that their active participation in these simulated challenges not only educates the students about MSF, but also stimulates selflessness, character traits we aspire to develop here at CIC.
“I can’t believe how many people wanted to give!”
Yiming Jiang is one of many student who care about the community and turn their talents into altruistic endeavors in the fundraiser.
He was one of the first to join in on Melissa Zhang’s Amigurumi lessons. He and his peers spent months during lunch, spare periods, and precious after-school time hunched over their yarn and crochet needles in preparation for hosting the Amigurumi Silent Auction during Global Health Mission.
When asked how he feels about the Silent Auction’s success and what it says about the value of his work, Yiming says: “it’s crazy. I can’t believe how many people wanted to give! I think it’s just a small hobby, just for fun, but people tell me it’s not easy. What I’ve learned most is that people see we did this for love, and for helping others.”
