Class at Ripley's Aquarium

Ms. Klodt’s grade 12 biology students have been busy discovering the world of natural sciences and living organisms through a series of experiential learning opportunities.

On Friday, June 5, students visited the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada and were guests at McMaster University’s Biology Greenhouse on Monday, June 8.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada  Students saw over 16,000 aquatic animals and learned about the important roles living organism’s play  in the ecosystem. The excursion also provided them with a better understand of sustainability and ecological interconnections.

As the only aquatic facility of its kind in Ontario, the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada provides a “world class experience that fosters educational and research” experiences. To learn more about the aquarium click here.

Biology Greenhouse at McMaster During a visit to the Biology Greenhouse at McMaster, Columbia students took a closer look at a titan arum, one of the largest growing flowering plants that can grow as tall as three meters (about 9 feet). Students also participated in its dissection and in field research by counting the seeds gathered during the dissection.

The Biology Greenhouse at McMaster University is primarily used for teaching and research in McMaster’s Biology Department. However, the Greenhouse is also used for outreach and welcomes students from local students and the general public. Visit them online and stay updated on the great research they do here.
