One Family, Two Student Council VPs. Here’s How CIC Builds Leaders

By December 29, 2025No Comments

Columbia International College is proud to celebrate Oscar Kwok (Center), who was elected Vice-President of the Student Council and chosen as the Vote of Thanks speaker of December 2025 Graduation Ceremony, an honour that reflects his leadership, character, and commitment to service.

Adding to the significance of this achievement, Oscar’s elder sister Agnes (right, currently studying at UofT Rotman Commerce), also held the same leadership position two years earlier, making their story an inspiring example of sibling success at CIC.
Oscar and Agnes joined CIC together in August 2022. Like many students adjusting to a new country and school environment, Oscar recalls beginning his CIC journey as “shy, timid, and lacking confidence.”

From the start, his sister encouraged him to step forward—urging him to make new friends, explore opportunities beyond the classroom, and eventually join Student Council.

“She was a great leader at school, and an even greater role model in my life,” Oscar shared. “It was she that got me to sign up for Student Council in the first place and shaped me to become the person I am today.”

How CIC Transforms Potential into Leadership

Inspired by his sister’s accomplishments and supported by CIC’s Total Care Education System®, Oscar gradually built confidence through hands-on involvement in student leadership. Watching how much Agnes achieved during her term as Vice-President motivated him to challenge himself even further after her graduation.

“I have seen how much she accomplished during her time as VP, which motivated me to try even harder,” Oscar said. “I am beyond excited to continue her legacy in the school.”

Along the way, Oscar learned that leadership often means embracing uncertainty. Advice from his sister left a lasting impact: stepping outside one’s comfort zone and being unafraid to ask questions.

“Being a leader doesn’t mean you have all the answers,” he explained. “By raising your hand, it shows that you are invested in your role and are willing to learn and grow.”

My Goal Is to Ensure Everyone Feels Represented

As Vice-President, Oscar’s primary goal has been to ensure that students feel seen, heard, and represented.

“My main goal for this year is to make every student feel heard,” he said. “Student Council ought to represent the student body, and I hope to turn student input into actions that can make a difference in the school community.”

Working closely with fellow council members, Oscar has been actively involved in planning and improving school events, including the Halloween Dance, where student feedback played a central role in shaping new ideas and refining traditions.

Excellence Beyond the Classroom

Oscar’s leadership is matched by exceptional academic and service achievements. He has earned a Grade 12 average of 98.6, received multiple Top Subject Prizes, and completed over 200 community service hours through initiatives such as leading morning announcements, tutoring peers, and volunteering at community events including Burlington Ribfest and Imagine in the Park.

In recognition of his values-driven leadership, Oscar has received several Character Awards and the Award for Integrity in Leadership.

Reflecting on his journey, Oscar credits the strong support system around him. “All of this cannot be achieved without my teachers, SLD advisors, and my sister,” he said. “They have provided me with unwavering support and encouragement along the way, and I truly cannot be thankful enough.”

Leadership That Lasts a Lifetime

For Oscar, leadership is not defined by titles alone, but by the skills it develops for the future.

“Leadership roles help you build skills like effective communication, creative problem solving, and teamwork,” he shares. “These aren’t just good for resumes—they’re skills for life.”

He believes that while not everyone will become a CEO or president, leadership qualities help shape confidence, earn trust, and guide individuals toward success in any path they choose.

Oscar’s journey—together with his sister’s—reflects CIC’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence, strong character, and authentic leadership.

Through meaningful opportunities, consistent guidance, and a culture of care, CIC empowers students to grow not only into high achievers, but into confident, capable individuals prepared for life beyond school.
